Paintings, sculptures, stories, movies, dances, and songs can all be inspiriting. We marvel at how the artists involved in the project are able to connect the lines, pieces, and elements together to create something that is beyond our own ability. The awe we experience when viewing art of quality often stirs something in us. But have you ever wondered how they got to the “finished product”?
Artists typically have an end in mind with regards to their work. They are setting out to specifically produce something. The finer points may change along the way, but the intended results are the focus.
Marriage like art needs an end in mind!
Today it seems as though marriages are just as or more likely to end in divorce than they are in “til death due us part.” The common perception is that 50% of all marriages end in divorce. The statistics tell us that marriages which are considered second, third, etc. marriages increase exponentially in the likelihood of divorce.
There is a strong debate as to the place of marriage in our society, so it’s even more important to understand our desired results so that we might set forth to create a masterpiece that inspires others.

Having the end in mind
- Read Matthew 19: 1-12. Now read it in the Message paraphrase. When Jesus’ says “let anyone accept this who can” and the Message paraphrases it “if you’re capable of growing into the largeness of marriage do it” how does this change your thoughts on what marriage is?
- If marriage is something we grow into, how can a couple be “successful” in their marriage?
- Is marriage for everyone?
- If a couple is struggling, what are the alternatives to just calling it quits?
- What key thought should a couple keep in mind as they grow in their marriage?
