Lying: the last remaining gotcha?

If you're a college basketball fan, this time of year is heaven for you. Even so, there are some fans who uncertain of their future as the University of Tennessee announced the firing of it's men's basketball coach, Bruce Pearl. Rather than get into the specifics of all the details related to his firing, it appears his greatest act of failure was lying.

This is becoming a recurring theme among news cycles, people losing their job for lying. Consider the Bush-era controversy concerning ex-CIA operative Valerie Plame, Scotty Libby was forced to resign and later found guilty of lying. Jim Tressel of Ohio State University is under intense scrutiny for lying. The former-principal of a local school retired early due to an investigation regarding lying. Former Christian leader Ted Haggard was ultimately disgraced for his lying about his behavior. Has lying become the ultimate "gotcha?"

In a world that likes to see truth as relative, lying has become the inescapable crime. We can attempt to justify our lies, make excuses for our lies, and even cover-up or lies, but ultimately our lies cost us. We cannot tolerate lying!

This is probably why hypocrisy is so difficult to forgive. After all, hypocrisy is lying isn't it?

As we struggle with the truth, let's remember lying is a bad choice.
